Wednesday: WIP

Works in Progress…..  aka   WIP to all the knitters & crocheters!

I’m feeling pressured to knit/crochet during all my waking hours…………and some of the hours I should be sleeping!

First, there is the on-going Christmas Stockings project:  Copying a vintage stocking, not once, or twice, but 4 times…….for a local client.  (pretty sure she is expecting these for Christmas!)  :)  I’ve got sock #1 off the needles and sock #2 is past the heel, heading towards the toe now.

Sock 1 & 2 moving right along.

These are made with wool yarn, and a touch of angora for the Santa beard, so they will need to be blocked when I’m done knitting.  At this point, they look like a messy bunch of knitting……

Alternating with the Stocking project, is my own self imposed challenge for September.  Yes, it comes right after August……….which is half over already!  This year, I’m attempting 30 Hats in 30 Days.  So far, I’ve completed hat number 9 and have the next 3 in progress….here’s a quick look at this weeks hats:

Several hats coming from the sewing room………not in picture taking stages yet!  In the works; some fleece baby hats and a baby bonnet fit for a christening!

Back to work!

First Order for Christmas 2013!

That’s right!  2013

I was contacted through my Craigslist Ad (thanks CL) to see if I’d like to look at a project for next Christmas & this is the vintage piece I was given this afternoon.

I was thrilled the client brought me the “notes” from the original knitter, in addition to this stocking to copy.   The family has been using these for 2 generations now, and there are going to be some new babies, thus……………the order for more socks!

First on the list is to come up with the supplies.  The “notes” specify angora for the Santa, and 3 ply yarn for the stocking & Size 2 needles.  There are some general directions for the actual sock and some specifics for the Santa face.

Before I get started on the supply list, I think I’m going to dampen this one, and see if it smells like wool.  It has a yummy soft feel to the piece and was made in the early 70′s.  I want the new socks to mirror this original, to the best of my ability.

I am SO glad this is for next Christmas! I will be in the Christmas spirit all summer here at Stitchknit.
Anyone else get this giddy thinking about copying an older piece?

And, the stockings were all hung……………

So Many Granny Squares!

I finally did it!  I finished the Christmas Stockings.  I was flying pretty high all afternoon, and had called the client, letting her know she could pick these up this week…..     And, guess what?  See those socks that don’t have names on them?   I was asked to put names on 2 of them, which I did…….but there is one more kiddo, born a week ago I guess.  And, another little one is due Nov. 11th!  So, I’m not quite done.  :(

I discovered I can “write” with yarn, after adding Kailey and Breanne to the socks.  I gave some thought to how to get the names embroidered………..tracing, marking the yarn somehow?  And, when I couldn’t figure out anything that seemed workable, I just started stitching free hand.  Or free thread as the case may be.  Pretty fun!  My only hope is the new baby has a short name!  These socks are only so wide!

I also added a pair of womens socks to the Etsy shop today.

I was so tempted to keep them for myself, but just how many pairs of socks does one person need??  My sock drawer overfloweth! I do love wearing hand made socks tho.  They feel so cushy.  Could be why I love fall & winter!  I get to wear my collection of hand knit socks!  :)

Since I had 2 projects finished today………..and neither of them were small, nor quick……………..I decided to pick up some thread and a small crochet hook and make a collection of crocheted flowers.  I’m aiming to add brooch pins to them, as well as find something interesting for the centers….and get them in the shop this week.  I’ve had to come up with some smaller, more portable projects & these fit the bill.  (our school district had a 3 day weekend this weekend…and it seems like my kiddo has been home for weeks not days)  I’ve had to supervise him closely, as he can’t remember how to treat our dog.  So, little projects abound now……….I’ve got yarn, patterns, hooks & needles everywhere.  No work in the sewing studio…….but I did get lots done over the last 3 days.

Tomorrow is a big sewing day.  Lots of appointments scheduled, both here and at the retirement home I visit weekly.  And, I’m going to have time to check the stores for yarn to match the crocheted baby sweater my client sent the wrong yarn for.

Speaking of stores………….    I am anxious to see the new Hobby Lobby store that is supposed to be opening this month in our area.  I read other blogs, and see mention of this store often………..hoping it lives up to the hype.  Not that I need more yarn, or anything!  :)

More Than Busy Here

Right off the bat, here is the pile of “parts” for the Christmas Stockings for the custom order…………

I don’t want to know how many ends there are to weave in.  Starting to assemble these in the AM, when I’m my least cranky.  I’m going to tweak the non pattern, as the green band that is supposed to be picked up after putting the sock together.  I want to make the band, embroider the names while the band is a flat piece, then seam it up and attach it to the sock.  Sounds easier and I’m betting no one but the original crafter would know the difference.

Next on the list is a completed baby blanket.  Not quite a blanket, but I don’t know what to call something this size.  It is a 30″ square, if I don’t stretch it.  :)

I do love this.  It started out as a bit of work to show the basics of a granny square, to a beginning crochet class.  I couldn’t rip it out, I loved how it looked, as well as how it felt!  And, the little size??  I think it is just right for wrapping up a little one.  The size that will get used……not something that is too big.  This will fit over a car seat, or stroller………..and it is just the right size to become the special blankie that goes everywhere with the toddler!

And, just to prove I haven’t been wasting time here……….I’ve finished this Infinity Scarf/Cowl yesterday and got a few pictures of it this evening.  Yummy yarn, slubby, thick, thin………..pink and a gray blue……  I do love how it turned out.

Both the blanket and the Infinity Scarf are going to be in the Etsy shop within the hour (barring any disasters here)

This week end has been busier than most, as I added in a 2nd foster kiddo…………just for the weekend; to give his foster family a break for a couple days.  Today was filled with cooking and even a bit of canning.  One batch of green tomato mincemeat, which is to die for in small little tarts!  Ohhhh…….with a cup of tea………..

Finished off the evening with homemade pizzas, made to order!  Yummy!  One of these days I should take the camera to the kitchen!  As much as I hate to cook, I do like to eat yummy food.  And, I do like to see that the food served here is the best I can come up with.  Tonights offering was just delish.  If I wasn’t so tired, it would have tasted better.  :)
